“A loss of vision can bring upset, worry, and alter your affinity for life.  Many feel a loss of control and independence.  If this sounds familiar to you or a loved one, there is hope. If you have been told by your eye doctor that a change in your eyeglass prescription will not help you see better, there may be another possibility.

My commitment to helping you starts with a conversation.  I will speak with you by phone before scheduling your low vision evaluation.  I want to understand you and your vision, explain what you can expect from me, and answer your questions.  If I feel that I’ll be able to help you, we will make the appointment.  I have many ways of helping people with low vision, but if I do not think that I can help, I will be honest with you.

I will ask you to bring the things with you that you would like help seeing.  Bring your newspaper, your Bible, your knitting, your crafts or hobbies.  I want to help you see the things that are important to you.

If you want to keep driving or return to driving we will go outdoors so you can see exactly how much your vision is improved by bioptic telescopic glasses or contrast-enhancing glasses.

In addition to low vision glasses, I prescribe electronic magnifiers and small handheld magnifiers.  I’ll give you advice about proper lighting and guidance on nutrition and nutritional supplements, when necessary.  If appropriate, I will recommend one of the new high tech devices like the Implantable Miniature Telescope or eSight.

Before ordering any glasses or other devices, I’ll let you compare them to your present glasses and magnifiers.  I want you to see how much you will be helped by them.  I will order that device only if you see an improvement.  If you don’t, we’ll look for other solutions.

When you receive your special glasses or other device I will, once again, let you compare them with your previous glasses.  I don’t want you to take them if they don’t give you the help that you need.

I love helping people with low vision and have designed my practice with that in mind.  If you have low vision from macular degeneration, Stargardt’s disease, diabetes, optic atrophy, glaucoma or some other condition, please call.  There is no charge for the telephone consultation.  I’d love to be able to help you.”
